I just got home and I took a lot of pictures. Thanks to everyone who allowed me to snap shots of them. I really had fun this year and had trouble dragging myself out the door despite other committments. I forgot how much fun it is to jaw about bottles with people that know and that care. Wayne Kroll especially told me some fantastic stories of the roaming research that he has done across the state. And it was very nice to catch up with Roger about hutchinson sodas. There were so many nice people and I can't mention them all now. But there was a diverse croud - I saw people from Madison, West Bend, Oconomowoc, Fort Atkinson, Fond Du Lac, Tomahawk?, Watertown, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Oshkosh, and Antioch to name a few. It was great seeing everybody. I will post a lot of pictures later. So, be sure and check back!

This is by no means a complete listing of everybody that I talked to at the show but it covers quite a few....
Here's the first five,

Sid shows off a beer bottle. He is a host collector with a great collection!

Andy & Tony wind up driving from Fond Du Lac to attend their first big bottle show. They both left with some bottles. Here they are holding up a few that they are really going to wish they got to keep when they find out how many of these turn up.

Sorry about the date. I charged the camera so that I would have maximum power and then didn't re-set the date and time stamp. Everything says New Years 2005. It seemed cold enough to be new years outside.

Here's Gary with a not so old soda bottle. Gary sold me a great colored soda at last year's show. Thanks Gary!

Mike and Ron drove up from that south of the border state. I think they finally found some decent Chicago stuff this year. Oh, and thank you Ron. That was very generous and I appreciate it!

This is Bob and Debbie. They agreed to not one, but two photos. This one has the better smiles. The other could be accidentally destroyed (if the price is right!).

And now for some more.

Here's Doug. I just met him and struck up a conversation about an old picture he is holding showing people swimming (in days gone by) in Big Cedar Lake. There is a large slide down into the water. I've dove there and was curious as to where this swim spot was. It was a pleasure to talk with him. I would encourage anyone to do it next time they see him. He had some eclectic but neat stuff. For example, he also had an original (old looking) picture of a dead animal collector from Hartford.

This set starts off with some budding romance! Congratulations are in order to Mark & Lani who are now engaged. Congrats! Mark has moved some bottles to the basement to better make room for their new life together. Mark, if you ever need to move some of those things even farther south, I'm ready.

Here's Wayne Kroll doing what Wayne Kroll does. Taking rubbings of rare beer bottles. (He has a custom pencil). I'm telling you, if you don't like Wayne, you need a different hobby. The more I talk to him the more I realize that he is the nicest guy you could ever meet. Plus, there is no-one alive today who knows more about the history of the beer industry in Wisconsin, and it's early foundations. (I'm not exaggaderating!)

I LOVE this shot. It shows Wayne making a rubbing of a rare beer bottle the guys from Fond Du Lac found. (Wayne does show the bottle as a crown but they found it as a blob top weiss beer).

Here's John at his table. He wrote the Waukesha Springs Era book that is featured next to him. I own one of these books but mine is a collector edition because it was signed by the author. The book is almost an encyclopedia of who is who in the developement of Waukesha as a booming spring town. We are hoping to put up a link to his site shortly so that people interested in the book can easily find him.

Here's a great guy named Steve that I met at the show. Like many collectors (myself included) he was looking for specific items that fit into perfectly into his precise area of collection. Here he shows a rare milk bottle that he found. While Steve has a last name that reminds one of a musician, at least it is a good one. He can be thankful that he wasn't like the character from Office Space who was embarassed to be named Michael Boltin.

Last but certainly not least, I've got Roger, Steve and Ryan. Steve is holding up one of those common bottles called Anthony Hopkins or something. I had a great time catching Roger alone for a few minutes talking about hutchinsons and bottle collecting in general. I even tried to shill his book for him when some unsuspecting collectors walked by. I showed them my very worn copy (in the hopes that they would see how useful the book is). However, I'm not sure that I closed the sale. As most of you know, Roger's book is really nice if you like antique sodas, clays and weiss beers.

Well, that's it for the pictures. As already noted, I had a great time this year seeing everyone. I thought the venue was an upgrade. It seemed a lot more like a finished meeting room than a cafeteria. Plus, it was easy to find and probably saved a ton of driving for those Westerly oriented types.

One thing that came up for me personally was that I would offer people something like $10 for a bottle that was worth $10. But then they'd say, "We'll I tumbled it and that's worth $15 alone!" Here's what I'm hoping people will do. STOP TUMBLING these bottles! I like them way way more with their original character, wear and stain. If you insist on tumbling bottles, I prefer that you remove as little glass as possible. And do it only on the bottles you plan to keep. To me, over-tumbling bottles is WORSE than the worst possible wear. (Okay I'm off the soapbox). Great to see everyone! Bob

Very nice pics Bob! I completely agree with you on the tumbled bottles. I hate it when people tumble a common bottle and try to sell it for 5 or 10 dollars more. There are a couple of bottles that i think should get a LIGHT tumble, especially ones with different colors.

Hey Tony. Is that last line about colored glass some kind of hint that I need to tumble my yellow quart from Watertown?

NO WAY BOB! You go and tumble that bottle and your legion of adoring fans will be wandering aimlessly for years to come! Plus that stopper will go "ping" and break off never to be put back on! If I had alot of money or a couple amber hutches you needed I would go after that bottle!

Thanks Tom,
I am not going to tumble it. Don't worry. Did you get anything local at the show? What did you think of having it there? It had to save you some driving!

Cut it until it has no slug plate marks and it looks like a tooled blob. The version with the slug plate and applied blob is a known variety. Imagine the value it would have as a new variety. Plus it would have that waxy Vaseline look that has to at least be considered a trend if not very desirable since there were dozens of bottles on display that had it. When you cut a lot of glass off an old bottle it is like you are an amature glass blower. You are doing more than collecting you are creating.

I say tumble the hell out of it!

Steven

Cant say if it was or wasn't. Never seen this "yellow" beer in person.

Just kidding, for me it would depend on what level of staining there is on it.

Sometime Tony, we will have to set up a chance for you to see it. It's very nice. There were some mighty good bottles from Fond Du Lac at the show. I recall seeing some early bottles such as; Valentine & Co, Mor. Krembs, and J. E. Hickey & Co. Were you impressed? The bottle I would like to see from Fond Du Lac is that Mor Krembs quart. That thing looks awesome!
