Tom and I returned to the shallow weedy areas of North Lake. We saw a natural spring on the way in which was pretty cool. Tom found the only glass that was old. Just before we were leaving, he got a Theo Dietzler & Co hutch in nice condition. However, I can't complain at all. I found an old animal trap. The perfect find with Tom there because he is an expert. I found first the snapping part. After I searched around for several more minutes, I found the chain. Boy am I glad I did. The chain had a license tag issued by the state of Wisconsin dating it to 1929. The tag itself is neat. It's made of brass with a copper connecting wire. The rest of it is dirty and rusty. I'm trying to clean it in the hopes that I can make out the brand name.
I also saw a little northern pike in the weeds. It was a pretty sight. At the end of the tank, I saw a huge natural spring in the bottom of the lake about 3 or 4 feet accross. It reminded me of silver springs in Florida! I can't recall ever seeing one like that in Wisconsin. I know right where it is too if there are any natural springs junkies waiting to see it.
Hi Bob, I enjoyed reading this post because it reminds me that there is so much more to doing this than just finding bottles. That was a very fun morning of diving. When (and if) you decipher what the pan (round part the animal would step on to trigger the trap) says please post up. It is an unusual trap that I think could be really good. Hey Tom. It was fun. I think I had higher expectations of tons of great glass (but then again - I probably always do). I am thankful for the trap. I have spent some time cleaning it but I can't yet make out the stamping. I'm hoping that when it dries out more, I'll get a better chance.
Here's some shots. Tom noted that the 'double' arms are a little unusual.

This one shows the little brass tag. These tags alone are cool enough to make you want to collect them. You can see the tiny printing that was stamped into it the brass. Plus, they coiled a thin copper wire to hold it on. Both of those metals hold up nicely even under water. The diameter of this tag is only about 5/8 of an inch (making it just smaller than a dime).
