Hausmann Brewing Co Madison WI

The Hausmann Brewing Co opened in 1891 and lasted 29 years until Prohibition went into effect in 1920. The Hausmann family once owned the Capitol Brewery (no relation to today's Capital Brewing of Middleton). It was a big operation, taking up nearly two-thirds of the 300 block of State Street. It operated from 1854 as Voigt Capital Steam Brewery until 1863, when Joseph Hausmann purchased it. He and his sons operated it until 1919. The brewery was destroyed by fire during Prohibition in 1923 and never reopened. Inscription reads, “HAUSMANN BREWING CO REGISTERED MADISON, WIS.”
